The large mucilage content of marshmallow (Mucilage is a substance which protects the mucus membranes of many systems of the human organism from irritations and inflammations that may trouble them) makes it an excellent demulcent. Marshmallow root is mostly used for issues of the digestive system, such as inflammations of the digestive tract, inflammations of the mouth, gastric disorders, peptic ulcer, intestinal inflammation and colitis. It is also indicated for skin problems like varicose veins and skin ulcers eg. abscesses, furuncles. Marshmallow leaves are indicated for the lungs and the urinary system. In cases of urethritis and kidney stones, marshmallow leaves can be very soothing.
