Due to the constituents of liquorice and specifically due to glycosides ( a substance which is produced by plants and during its hydrolysis gives out a sugar and one or more additional products) which it contains and are similar in structure to natural steroids existing in the human body, it is very beneficial against problems of the adrenal glands, such as Addison’s disease. (Those are the glands which produce hormones regulating different operations in the body. When adrenal glands malfunction and do not produce an adequate amount of hormones, then the person gets Addison’s disease.) It is widely used in bronchial problems such as catarrh , bronchitis and cough in general.
